| Freezing Equine Embryos | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:2 PM] | | | As a member of the International Embryo Transfer Data Retrieval Committee, I hear reports each year of the number of frozen embryos exported for the various livestock species. There are approximately 50,000 cow embryos that are exported from the United States each year. Unfortunately, the number of equine embryos frozen is extremely small and export of equine embryos is nearly non-existent. |
| Frozen Semen Myths – Part I | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:6 PM] | | | Stallion owners marketing frozen semen often are faced with resistance from mare owners or veterinarians who are biased against using frozen semen. These biases are usually the result of a previous bad experience using frozen semen or myths and misunderstandings that have been propagated over the years. This article will address those concerns and dispel some myths that may prevent mare owners from taking advantage of current frozen semen technology and stallion owners from maximizing their horse's marketability. |
| Frozen Semen Myths & Misconceptions Part II | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:10 PM] | | | In the last issue of Foundations, we introduced the subject of the myths and misconceptions stallion owners often face when marketing frozen semen. These biases surface as resistance from mare owners or veterinarians who may have had a previous bad experience using frozen semen or myths that have been propagated over the years. |
| Multiple Embryo Transfers | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:13 PM] | | | Within the past year, several breed registries have changed their embryo transfer rule to allow unlimited registration of foals from embryo donors. This rule change has created controversy regarding the pro's and con's of such a procedure. |
| 8th International Symposium on Equine Reproduction | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:18 PM] | | | Approximately 300 scientists and clinicians from 26 different countries gathered at Colorado State University for the 8th International Symposium on Equine Reproduction. These international symposia are held every 4 years as a venue for clinicians and scientists to present the latest information on equine reproduction. Presented in this article is a brief overview of information presented in the Stallion Section. Of the 150 abstracts presented either orally or as a poster, one-third of those concerned the stallion and/or semen. This is, by far, the largest number of papers presented on stallion reproduction at these international conferences. In the next issue of Foundations, a brief overview of the pregnant and non-pregnant mare sessions will be presented. |
| European Quarter Horse Market | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:20 PM] | | | The Quarter Horse is creating an entirely new horse market in many parts of Europe - attracting new people into what has always been a well established horse industry. Europeans are discovering the appeal of the Quarter Horse -ease of handling, smooth riding, and fun nature of Western horse shows. Additionally, the fascination with all things 'cowboy' is still quite popular throughout Europe. |
| Managed Growth Serves our Clients | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:22 PM] | | | In 1987, Paul Loomis founded Select Breeders Service, Inc. with the goal of bringing frozen semen technology to horse breeders. Beginning with a single laboratory and the willingness to travel the United States to work with forward thinking breeders of Warmblood Sporthorses, SBS quickly developed a reputation for quality service and superior technology. |
| Select Breeders Unveils New Mobile Laboratory | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:24 PM] | | | Select Breeders introduced the industry's first mobile freezing laboratory in 1994 to bring frozen semen technology to farms and veterinary clinics throughout the US. After so many years of hard work, it was time to retire the lab and construct a new one. |
| Breeding Records and Reproductive Efficiency | | | [March 3, 2004 - h.4:27 PM] | | | Keeping good breeding records is one of the cornerstone principles of sound reproductive management. As we gear up for another breeding season, responsible managers should be evaluating last season and making decisions to improve results. In this issue I will discuss the importance of keeping detailed accurate breeding records and the impact of reproductive efficiency on breeding programs. |
