Russell Dilday is 2008 World’s Greatest Horseman
 [February 27, 2008 - h.9:14 PM]

The adage “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” no longer applies to Porterville, California, trainer Russell Dilday. On February 24, Dilday, riding his great horse, Topsails Rien Maker, finally captured the World’s Greatest Horseman title – but the road to the Championship wasn’t easy. After the first two events, it seemed clear that it would come down to two riders

Dilday, and Robbie Schroeder.
“I haven’t absorbed it yet,” admitted Dilday. “I keep waiting for them to announce ‘we have a review.’”
Having finished as Reserve World’s Greatest Horseman twice, he knew that he needed to lay it all on the line to win – but it seemed that luck wouldn’t be on his side. Drawing up first in the herd work, he only managed to score a 211 – a score that normally wouldn’t seem too promising. However, tough cattle made it difficult to mark high, and Russell ended up in fourth place.

Shady Lil Starlight Wins 2007 NRCHA Open Hackamore World Championship
 [February 24, 2008 - h.2:28 PM]

Cowboy Kentata is the 2007 NRCHA Open Hackamore National Champion, Shady Lil Starlight Wins 2007 NRCHA Open Hackamore World Championship, Taking three horses back in the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship finals proved to be difficult, but Caldwell, Idaho trainer Jake Telford managed to pilot Shady Lil Starlight to the title.

“It was all a blur. It was definitely fast and furious,” admitted Telford. “This is a really good horse, and is the most reliable of the three I had. Luckily, they are all good, but he is very consistent.”

The newly crowned champion earned $9,062 for the score of 442.5 (217.5/225) in the class. In fact, Telford said he believed it is the toughest class at the World Show. “There are so many horses that could have won this, if things had been a little different,” he said. “Maybe someone didn’t have a great cow, or maybe their horses weren’t working well. I just put a lot of faith in him.”

Dun It Big Wins 2007 NRCHA Open Bridle World Championship
 [February 24, 2008 - h.2:21 PM]

Leavin With Me is 2007 NRCHA Open Bridle National Champion, Dun It Big Wins 2007 NRCHA Open Bridle World Championship “It was definitely worth the trip,” laughed Jay Holmes following the awards ceremony for the National Reined Cow Horse Association Open Bridle World Championship. He had just ridden Dun It Big to the stallions second World Championship with a score of 440 (215/225). That high score also garnered a check for $7,387.

With the large size of the Lone Star Arena and the toughness of the cattle, Holmes knew he needed to strategize. “I didn’t push him as hard in the rein work, and saved him for the cattle,” he explained. “When it came out, I thought it would be good. It honored the horse, and I took it two turns down the fence.”

NMSU Truckin Chex Takes Two Riders to NRCHA World Show Finals
 [February 22, 2008 - h.9:35 AM]

Showing in one of the most grueling events in the equine world just once in a day is difficult enough – showing twice is doubly difficult. However, NMSU Truckin Chex, known as Elvis in the cow horse world, proved his exceptional endurance as he led the Non Pro Bridle preliminaries at the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show by 5.5 points with owner Karen Stallings. This was just a few hours after the talented performer also qualified for the Open Bridle Finals with Karen’s husband, Kevin.

“I think that’s what makes him a great horse,” Karen said last October after Elvis won the Non Pro Bridle at the 2007 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. “Kevin and I can both ride him, and he has more than enough to give.”

Michelle Cowan Wins Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Derby Non Pro Championship; Tammy Johnston Takes Intermediate
 [February 19, 2008 - h.12:23 PM]

Michelle Cowan collected all the rewards at the Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Derby on her horse, Reward Me Please (Chic Please X Reward Me Peppy), when her 146.5 in the cow work broke a tie with Tammy Johnston and clinched the Non Pro Championship. Her last National Reined Cow Horse Association event, the 2007 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, had the same result - but on a different mare, Wheres My Shine (Shining Spark X Boomerita), also entered in the Derby.

“Coming in I thought they both had good chances - each has her own strengths and weaknesses,” Michelle said. “Dolly (Reward Me Please) is a year older and she is so consistent down the fence and always good in the herd. She always stops and turns big. Reining is challenging but she was good here. She just gives you a lot of confidence down the fence and is incredibly fast and very tight on a cow. She’s the best fence horse I’ve ever had.”

Latest Action from the NRCHA Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions - Corey Cushing and Soula Moolah Take Circle Y Ranch SRCHA Derby Lead
 [February 18, 2008 - h.7:42 AM]

The Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby presented a bevy of good reining runs, and the high score of the day was marked in the last set. Corey Cushing, of Scottsdale, Arizona, rode Soula Moolah to win the rein work and take over the Open Derby lead. Cushing and Soula Moolah, by Soula Jule Star and out of Dox Home Remedy, topped the leader board with a 151. They hold a 3-point composite lead with a 296.5.

Soula Moolah is owned by Kevin and Sydney Knight, and was previously ridden by their daughter, Kylie, who was originally slated to show the gelding in the Derby. Last June, Knight and Soula Moolah were the Amateur Champions at the NRCHA Derby. However, a stress fracture in Kylie’s back necessitated a change in riders – hence Cushing.

Tammy Johnston and Quanah Dual Hold On To Circle Y Non Pro Derby Lead - Robert J. Smith III and Shiners Red Pepper Top Non Pro Rein Work
 [February 17, 2008 - h.9:2 PM]

For ERCHA cow horse fun: Andrea Fasani marked the high rein work score of 142 on Troubled Gangster in the Amateur class.

Competing in a hackamore, Robert J. Smith III and Shiners Red Pepper posted the high rein work score for the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Non Pro Derby. Smith and the Shining Spark son out of Little Lena Lady marked a 146.5, boosting their composite score to 284.5.

It is unsurprising that the pair would have such a high score in the reining phase of competition as they have been competitive at National Reining Horse Association approved events.

Reigning Snaffle Bit Futurity Champions Leads Circle Y Ranch Derby, Boyd Rice and Oh Cay N Short Top Circle Y Ranch Derby Herd Work
 [February 17, 2008 - h.10:55 AM]

The 93-entrant Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby open herd work was dominated by two former Snaffle Bit Futurity Champions. Boyd Rice, of Spearman, Texas, topped the herd work, on the 2007 champion, Oh Cay N Short.

Their 148 bested the next closest score by 1.5 points. Oh Cay N Short, by Oh Cay Quixote and out of Bit Of Shorty, is owned by Kevin and Sydney Knight. The flashy bay stallion is the first horse that Rice has ridden for the Knight family. Kevin wanted to buy a horse for Rice to ride at the Snaffle Bit Futurity, and when the acclaimed cutting trainer tried the horse, Knight bought him sight unseen. It turned out to be a very lucrative deal – the stallion earned both Knight and Rice their first Snaffle Bit Futurity Championship.

National Reined Cow Horse Association Stakes Returns to Idaho
 [February 6, 2008 - h.10:36 PM]

The National Reined Cow Horse Association will return the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa, Idaho, March 26-30.

Former NRCHA President Dan Roeser spearheads the event in his home state and was instrumental in moving the event to Idaho. He said, “This is the third year for this event to be in Nampa and it’s growing each year. We’re looking forward to continuing this growth together.”

With a 100,000 square foot indoor arena, over 500 stalls, multiple outdoor arenas, a food service provider, RV Park with full services, a dedicated staff and a nationally recognized equine veterinary hospital adjacent to the property, the Idaho Horse Park complex boasts every amenity to make the exhibitors’ stay an enjoyable one. It is located just off Interstate 84, at exit 38, twelve miles west of Boise.

Tammy Johnston and Quanah Dual Top Circle Y Ranch Derby Non Pro Herd Prelims
 [February 17, 2008 - h.9:2 AM]

Tammy Johnston was all smiles after the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby herd work ended on Saturday, February 16. For years, she has worked diligently behind the scenes to help her husband, Lance – but that has begun to change. She and her horse, Quanah Dual, marked a 144 in the herd work, to lead both the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro divisions.

“I am so excited. I know we still have to get through two more events, but this was the kind of confidence booster I needed,” the Lindsay, California, native explained.
